8 June 2009 - Consultation on new transport duties

The Equality Commission for Northern Ireland is consulting on its draft Statutory Code of Practice on the forthcoming Disability Discrimination (Transport Vehicles) Regulations (NI) 2009 from 8 June until 25 September 2009. 

 

The draft Code sets out the scope and application of the Regulations upon transport providers, and explains the extent of the new rights for disabled people.  Transport providers will be under a legal duty not to treat disabled people less favourably than other service users, and to make reasonable adjustments to make their services accessible.  Transport services affected include: buses and coaches, taxis, trains, rental vehicles and breakdown / recovery services.

 

The Equality Commission is keen to hear the views of all interested parties and will be holding consultation events throughout Northern Ireland, as follows:

 

Londonderry Tuesday 1 September         10:00-13:00   The Junction

 

Omagh           Wednesday 2 September   10:00-13:00   Omagh Community House

 

Newry             Thursday 3 September       10:00-13:00   Ballybot House

 

Belfast            Friday 4 September             10:00-13:00   Equality Commission
