19 November 2009 - Imtac publishes training guide

Imtac has today publsihed "Disability training - good practice guidelines for transport providers."  The Guide highlights the fundamental importance of quality staff training in ensuring that transport services are accessible to disabled people.  It covers the business and legal benefits of training, who should receive training, the differences between disability awareness and Disability Equality Training, the compenents of effective disability training and the monitoring and evaluation of training.

New transport regulations arising from the Disability Discrimination Order (2006) will be introduced in Northern Ireland in January 2010.  This will require providers of certain transport services to look at the way they provide their services to ensure that the services do not discriminate against disabled people.  One of the key ways that transport providers can avoid disability discrimination is through effective staff training.

Over the next few months Imtac will be promoting our Guide to transport providers.  We plan to run an information session around Disability Equality Training for transport providers in the new year.  The Guide can be downloaded from the publications section of this website. Hard copies and copies in alternative formats are available by contacting Michael Lorimer in our secretariat.
