One in every four parking bays provided for use of disabled people is abused by other members of the public at any time across Northern Ireland. That is the key finding of the first survey of accessible parking undertaken in Northern Ireland by volunteers at the end of March.
The survey ws organised by the Baywatch Campaign (NI) whose aim is to end the abuse of accessible parking. Spokesperson for the Campaign Ann Collins said "Previous surveys in Great Britain indicated that abuse here is higher - we believe most people will find the higher level of abuse in Northern Ireland shameful".
Over 400 surveys were completed during the week by people in every part of Northern Ireland. As well as recording the levels of abuse surveys indicated how the abuse of bays caused people major difficulties in carrying out their day to day activities. "Abuse of parking bays is not just inconsiderate," said Ann Collins, "it ruins journeys for many disabled people. We would ask that people who abuse these bays consider the consequences of their actions".
