20 June 2007 - Imtac urges end to Badge abuse

Disabled people urged to stop Blue Badge misuse

Misuse of the Blue Badge is damaging the scheme and must stop.  That is the clear message from the Baywatch Campaign which seeks to end the abuse of accessible parking bays designed for the use of disabled people.

Spokesperson for Baywatch Ann Collins, states “The majority of Badge holders use their Blue Badge responsibly, however we are aware of cases where misuse of the Badge is taking place.  This misuse brings the whole scheme into disrepute and has a negative effect on public opinion.  It is also illegal and means that parking spaces vital to many disabled people are being used by people who don’t need them.  Today we are calling for all Badge holders to use their Badges correctly.”

The Baywatch Campaign has identified three easy guidelines to assist Badge holders.  Ann explains “Badge holders should know where and when they can use the Badge.  Badge holders should always display their Badge clearly and correctly.  Finally the Badge is only for you so you should never let anyone else use it.”   Ann warns that Badge holders who ignore this advice should not expect to continue to get away with misuse.  “Traffic attendants have the powers to enforce the scheme on public roads.  We are working with Roads Service to see how best this can be done to benefit all legitimate users.”
