Department for Transport consultation on Blue Badge Eligibility

The Department for Transport has today announced a consultation on proposals to expand the Blue Badge eligibility criteria to more people with hidden disabilities.

In announcing the consultation the DfT says:

"The proposals, which would herald the most significant changes since the blue badge was introduced in 1970, would help remove barriers to travel for people with conditions such as dementia and autism, allowing them better access to work, shops and amenities. This could also further help create parity between physical and mental health, and means everyone can take advantage of every opportunity."

The consultation applies to the Blue Badge Scheme in England only. However any changes to eligibility in England are likely to replicated in Northern Ireland at a future date.
